The K-Beauty Guide
Everything you need to know about Korean skincare — from the famous multi-step routine to the ingredients worth knowing about.
Step by step
The Korean skincare routine
The Korean skincare routine is famous for its layering approach — applying products from thinnest to thickest consistency to maximise absorption and results. You don't need to do every step every day. Start with the essentials and add steps as your skin responds.
Oil Cleanser
PM onlyStart your evening routine by dissolving sunscreen, makeup, and excess sebum with an oil-based cleanser. Massage gently onto dry skin, then emulsify with water. This is the first step of the famous double cleanse.
Great for: All skin types, especially those who wear SPF (which should be everyone).
Shop oil cleansers →Water Cleanser
AM & PMA gentle foam, gel, or milky cleanser removes any remaining impurities and leaves skin clean without stripping. In the morning, use this step alone — no double cleanse needed if you've been home all night.
Key tip: Look for low-pH cleansers (4.5–5.5) to support your skin's natural barrier.
Shop cleansers →Toner / Essence
AM & PMApplied to slightly damp skin, a toner restores hydration, rebalances pH, and preps skin for actives. Korean toners are not the harsh, alcohol-based toners of the past — they're hydrating, soothing, and packed with skin-loving ingredients.
Difference: An essence is thicker and more concentrated than a toner, bridging the gap between toner and serum.
Shop toners & essences →Serum / Ampoule
AM & PMThe powerhouse of the routine. Serums contain the highest concentration of active ingredients — niacinamide for pores and brightness, vitamin C for glow, hyaluronic acid for plumpness, retinol for anti-ageing. Ampoules are even more concentrated for an intensive boost.
Rule: Don't layer vitamin C with retinol or direct acids. Use vitamin C in the AM; retinol or AHA/BHAs in the PM.
Shop serums →Eye Cream
AM & PMThe under-eye area is the thinnest skin on the face and shows fatigue and ageing first. Eye creams are formulated to be gentle, hydrating, and targeted — look for caffeine for puffiness, peptides for fine lines, and niacinamide for dark circles.
Application tip: Use your ring finger and tap — never rub — in small circular motions.
Shop eye care →Moisturiser
AM & PMSeals in all the layers beneath and supports the skin barrier. In the morning, choose something lightweight that sits well under SPF. At night, you can go richer — a sleeping mask or a cream with ceramides and peptides works wonderfully as a final step.
Shop moisturisers →SPF — the most important step
AM onlyKorean sunscreens are in a league of their own. They're lightweight, skin-toned, non-greasy, and actually enjoyable to wear — which means you'll actually wear them. UV damage is responsible for up to 80% of visible ageing. SPF50+ daily is the single most effective anti-ageing product you can use.
Our recommendation: Look for PA++++ (high UVA protection) and broad-spectrum coverage. Apply last, every morning, rain or shine.

The science
Key ingredients to know
K-beauty is known for innovative, effective ingredients. Here's a quick reference for the ones you'll encounter most often.
A form of vitamin B3. Minimises pores, brightens, regulates sebum, and strengthens the skin barrier. One of the most universally tolerated actives.
Filtrate from snail secretions, rich in glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid, and glycolic acid. Deeply hydrating and accelerates skin repair. Made famous by COSRX.
A calming plant extract (also known as cica or tiger grass) that soothes redness and inflammation and supports collagen production. A hero for sensitive and acne-prone skin.
A humectant that draws moisture into the skin. Can hold up to 1000x its weight in water. Works on all skin types and layers beautifully in a routine.
A resinous compound produced by bees, with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Especially good for blemish-prone and post-acne skin.
Vitamin A. The gold standard for anti-ageing — accelerates cell turnover, reduces fine lines, and unclogs pores. Start low (0.025–0.05%) and build up slowly. PM use only.
A beta-hydroxy acid that exfoliates inside the pore, making it ideal for acne, blackheads, and congested skin. Oil-soluble, so it penetrates sebum effectively.
Lipid molecules naturally found in the skin barrier. Topical ceramides restore and reinforce the barrier — essential for dry, sensitive, and compromised skin.
